Promoting Healthy Eating

Our cook prepares healthy snacks and cooks a two course lunch on a daily basis in our large kitchen.

Menus are carefully planned and varied to ensure that children have a balanced diet and are given the opportunity to sample and experience foods from a variety of cultures.

All our children receive a balanced, nutritious daily diet including 5 portions of fruit and vegetables.

We avoid large quantities of fat, sugar, salt, additives, preservatives and colourings. We also display all 14 known allergens on all our menus.

Before a child starts nursery, staff discuss and plan with each parent and/or carer the child’s dietary needs, including any allergies, and our cook creates meals of the same or similar appearance to the main menu, in order to avoid making the child feel different.

The dietary rules of religious groups and also of vegetarians/vegans are known and met in appropriate ways.

Throughout the nursery, developmental feeding stages are observed, from bottle feeding, baby led weaning and introducing freshly cooked foods , to the social occasion of eating food in a group.

Menus of meals and snacks are displayed and copies of menus are also accessible on your child’s Learning Journey documents – for the information of parents/carers.

Children arriving early will be offered an appropriate meal or snack.

Fresh drinking water is freely available.

All children can help to plant seeds and to water and harvest fruit and vegetables from our own gardens.

They also get the opportunity to help our cook to prepare and taste the harvest!

We also encourage healthy eating during play activities and topic themes.
